CentOS

CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) is a free, open-source Linux distribution that is functionally compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), offering a stable, secure, and enterprise-grade operating environment for servers and production systems. Built from the same source code as RHEL, CentOS provides long-term reliability and robust package management via YUM/DNF, making it a popular choice for web hosting, cloud infrastructure, and data centers. However, since the shift to CentOS Stream—a rolling-release distribution positioned upstream of RHEL—the original CentOS Linux has been discontinued as of December 2021, with CentOS 8 reaching end-of-life and CentOS 7 continuing until June 2024. Despite this transition, CentOS remains historically significant and CentOS Stream continues to serve developers and enterprises seeking a balance between stability and access to newer features within the Red Hat ecosystem.
