System Images Collection
BackTrack Linux was a pioneering, specialized Linux distribution designed exclusively for penetration testing and security auditing . Developed by Offensive Security, it originated in 2006 from the merger of two security-focused projects, WHAX and Auditor Security Collection . The system was renowned for pre-packaging over 300 powerful open-source security tools—including Metasploit, Aircrack-ng, Nmap, and Wireshark—into a single, bootable Live environment that could be run directly from a CD or USB drive without installation . Over its lifespan, BackTrack evolved from a Slackware-based system to an Ubuntu-based one with versions like BackTrack 4 and 5, and it became famous for its wireless network auditing capabilities . However, its fixed release model and internal design challenges ultimately led Offensive Security to completely rebuild the platform on a Debian testing base in 2013, replacing BackTrack with its direct successor, Kali Linux, which remains actively maintained today.
